The fruit shown is that of a burdock which possesses many small hooks that will latch on to the fur of a a passing animal. It will then be carried around by the animal until the hooks dry and shrivel and the fruit falls off, hopefully on fertile ground. This should be some distance away from the parent, so that the parent and offspring will not compete, and also gives the chance to colonise new areas.
